What is fencing?

Fencing is a safe, exciting alternative sport for students.

Dating back as far as the Egyptian pharaohs, people have been blunting weapons, donning safety equipment, and playing with swords. We’d like to help you get involved in this tradition. Modern fencing has its roots in the swordplay of the Renaissance in Europe. The gentry would practice their swordplay, test one another, and occasionally fight duels to defend their honor.

The essence of fencing is to hit without being hit. Studentsmust be able to find the right time to strike while defending from the opponent’s strikes. This develops the mind as well as the body.

Why should we bring fencing to our school?

Fencing challenges the body and mind, while feeding the sword fighting fantasies of people everywhere. Students learn planning, decision-making, and spatial reasoning while developing balance, agility, and quickness.

Fencing is safe. There are fewer time-loss injuries (injuries that would keep students out of school and away from their sports) than dance, gymnastics, football, baseball, soccer, lacrosse, volleyball, track, and cross-country.

Fencing develops children’s minds as well as their bodies. Studies have shown that martial arts like fencing improve kids’ focus, impulse control, and mental manipulation.

Fencing also teaches strong physical and emotional self-discipline, self confidence, sportsmanship, and tactical flexibility.

Fencing can be done indoors in gyms, auditoriums, cafeterias, even large classrooms. HSS will provide equipment. This means that our classes are a relatively easy investment, both financially and in terms of space.
