One year ago, Houston Sword Sports held its first practice. It’s been a great year, and to celebrate we’re offering a discounted rate for all of our Bellaire Rec Center classes.
This special ends January 31st, don’t wait! Please contact Liz at Liz@HoustonSwords.com with any questions.

Craig Hlavaty of Between the Lines fame at CW39’s NewsFix program came and learned to fence with us. A great time was had by all, and Craig figured out the most important lesson of all on his own — hit your opponent when they least expect it. Who says fencing isn’t intuitive?

A huge thanks to Oskar Hasselhoff for coming out and teaching us about medieval and Renaissance swordfighting! We did our part to support violence in the neighborhood by bringing him to town, and both of his classes were funny and informative. I learned that I am not much of one for grappling, and that most medieval swordplay is more like a brawl than anything else. Click the pictures below to see more!
The kids learn how to wield wooden swords.
An excellent footwork lesson!
Collin is on his way to being a double-pay soldier with a two-handed sword.
Hooray for broadswords!
Dave gets pommeled.
I got to try out the grosse Messer, the “big knife.”
I also got to fall down. I think I was only supposed to fall partway down, but I don’t really bend backwards, so down I went.
